Ormond Beach Access Points
Ormond Beach offers multiple free public beach access ramps along A1A, with parking lots at Granada Boulevard (SR 40), John Anderson Drive, and Fortunato Park. Most ramps allow low-speed vehicle driving on the hard-packed sand — a signature Florida tradition unique to Volusia County.
Daytona Beach Access
Daytona Beach has paid metered ramps along A1A with a well-known 23-mile drivable beach. The Main Street Pier area is the social hub, with easy walk-on access for pedestrians and cyclists. Parking meters run year-round; arrive early on weekends during peak season.
Ponce Inlet Beach Access
Ponce Inlet's beaches are quieter and less commercial. Beachgoers park near the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse area and walk to the shore. The southernmost tip where the inlet meets the Atlantic offers some of the most scenic and uncrowded sand in all of Volusia County.
Flagler Beach Access
Flagler Beach in Flagler County sits just north of Volusia County and offers free beach access along SR A1A through town. Metered parking is available on the street. The beach is wide, unspoiled, and far less trafficked than Daytona — a locals' favorite.
Surfing Beaches
Ponce Inlet — Best Surf in the Area
Ponce Inlet consistently produces the best surf breaks in Volusia County. The jetties at the inlet mouth create reliable peaks that attract local surfers year-round. Swell from passing storms and tropical systems can bring overhead waves from fall through spring.
Ormond Beach North Breaks
The north end of Ormond Beach near Flagler County line sees cleaner, less crowded surf than the busier sections of Daytona. Sandbars shift with the seasons but generally provide decent beach breaks for intermediate riders.
Daytona Beach — Beginner-Friendly Surf
Daytona's surf tends to be smaller and more forgiving, making it a solid choice for beginners. Several surf schools operate along the beach near the Main Street and Sunglow Pier areas. The Sunglow Pier can produce rideable waves on overhead swells.
Flagler Beach Pier Breaks
Flagler Beach Pier draws surfers during northeast swells, with both sides of the pier providing different wave shapes. The vibe here is relaxed and old-school Florida — no crowds, no hype.
Quiet Beaches
Ponce Inlet South End
The stretch of beach south of the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse toward Canaveral National Seashore is among the quietest sand in the region. No commercial development, minimal crowds, and stunning views of the lighthouse make this a top pick for those seeking solitude.
Ormond Beach North of Granada
Drive or walk north of Granada Boulevard in Ormond Beach and the crowds thin out quickly. Wide beach, gentle surf, and a more residential feel give this stretch a peaceful, unhurried atmosphere compared to the Daytona core.
Flagler Beach — The Whole Town
Flagler Beach operates at a different tempo than Daytona. The entire beachfront is low-rise and laid-back, with small shops, local restaurants, and no resort towers looming over the shoreline. Weekday visits especially feel like stepping back in time.
New Smyrna Beach (South Volusia)
Just south of Ponce Inlet across the inlet lies New Smyrna Beach — technically a separate city but closely connected to the southern end of Volusia County's coastline. Highly regarded for its artsy downtown and quieter northern beach access.
Family Beaches
Ormond Beach Main Ramp Areas
Ormond Beach's central ramps off A1A are ideal for families: wide beach, calm surf most days, lifeguards on duty seasonally, and restroom facilities. The drive-on beach makes unloading chairs, coolers, and gear easy for families with young kids.
Daytona Beach Shores
Daytona Beach Shores is the quieter residential municipality just south of Daytona proper. Families with kids tend to prefer this section — fewer crowds than Main Street Daytona, still with drivable beach access and seasonal lifeguards.
Andy Romano Beachfront Park — Ormond Beach
One of Ormond Beach's most family-friendly spots, with picnic pavilions, grills, restrooms, and direct beach access. No vehicle driving in this section, making it safer and more relaxed for families with small children playing in the surf.
Tom Renick Beachfront Park — Ormond Beach
Another excellent Ormond Beach park facility with full amenities — pavilions, grills, showers, and a handicap-accessible beach boardwalk. Popular for birthday parties and group outings.
Dog-Friendly Beaches
Volusia County Drive-On Beach (Leash Required)
Dogs on leash are permitted on Volusia County's drivable beach year-round. This covers most of the Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach shoreline where vehicle access is allowed. Keep dogs leashed and clean up after them — violations carry fines.
Flagler County Beach — Flagler Beach
Flagler County allows leashed dogs on the beach year-round. The laid-back atmosphere of Flagler Beach makes it one of the more dog-welcoming communities on the northeast Florida coast. Several beachfront restaurants have outdoor seating that welcomes well-behaved dogs.
Ponce Inlet — Leash Required
Dogs on leash are allowed on the beach in Ponce Inlet. The quieter, less-trafficked sections near the lighthouse and south of town are especially pleasant for dog walks, particularly early morning or at sunset.
Tips for Bringing Dogs to the Beach
Bring fresh water — salt water is harmful if dogs drink too much of it. Keep paws cool in summer as sand can exceed 120°F midday. Rinse dogs after beach visits to remove salt and sand from their coats. Most local vets recommend avoiding the beach during the hottest midday hours in July and August.
